WIll meet him in the vestibule ten minutes before eighta an evening at the Ramo Table at Columbia University; would also take him and Mrs. Marham out to dinner. Angela Morgan will read some of her poems at the gathering.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
